פרופ׳ קיוואן ריהאי הוא מנהל תוכנית האנרגיה, האקלים והסביבה (ECE) במכון הבינלאומי לניתוח מערכות יישומיות (IIASA) - השותף האסטרטגי של מרכז ארכימדס, והיה אורח הכבוד בוועידה השנתית של האגודה הישראלית לאקולוגיה ומדעי הסביבה בשנת 2023.
קצרה היריעה לתאר ופרט את תרומתו של פרופ׳ ריהאי למדע האקלים, לגופים הבינלאומיים המקדמים את הערכות האנושות לשינויי האקלים ולטיפוח הדור הבא של מדעני האקלים. הוא מרצה כפרופסור אורח לניתוח מערכות אנרגיה באוניברסיטת גראץ לטכנולוגיה והוא הצטרף כעמית למכון פיין של בית הספר למכרות בקולורדו. הוא משמש גם כחבר סגל חיצוני במכון ללימודים מתקדמים (IAS) באוניברסיטת אמסטרדם.
לפרופ׳ ריהאי ניסיון רב במחקר בין-תחומי של אפשרויות תגובה לשינויי אקלים, בעבודה עם הפאנל הבין-ממשלתי לשינויי אקלים (IPCC) ומתן ייעוץ מדיניות ברמה הבינלאומית וגם הלאומית. בשנת 2020, הוא דורג במקום הראשון על ידי רויטרס כמדען האקלים המשפיע ביותר בעולם ובשנת 2021, הוא הוכר על ידי Clarivate כאחד מ-23 חוקרים ברחבי העולם ברשימת החוקרים המצוטטים ביותר בשלוש קטגוריות: מדעי הגיאוגרפיה; מדעי החברה; וסביבה ואקולוגיה. בשנת 2021, מזכ"ל האו"ם גוטרש מינה אותו לקבוצה בת 10 החברים כדי לייעץ לאו"ם לגבי מנגנון הסיוע הטכנולוגי ליישום אג'נדה 2030.

Prof. Riahi serves on the editorial boards of the journals Nature Energy, Energies, Energy Review Strategies and Global Transitions Journal; And he has authored more than 190 peer-reviewed articles.
During Prof. Riahi's visit, we were happy to connect him with Haaretz journalist Nir Hasson and they met to talk about science, climate and human nature between meetings at the government offices in Jerusalem.
Prof. Riahi's contribution to climate science, to the international bodies that promote humanity's assessments of climate change and to the cultivation of the next generation of climate scientists is indescribably wide-ranging. He is a visiting professor of energy systems analysis at the Graz University of Technology and has joined the Payne Institute of the Colorado School of Mines as a fellow. He also serves as an external faculty member at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) at the University of Amsterdam.
Prof. Riahi has extensive experience in interdisciplinary research into climate change response options, working with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and providing policy advice at the international and national level. In 2020, he was ranked number one by Reuters as the world's most influential climate scientist and in 2021, he was recognized by Clarivate as one of 23 researchers worldwide on the list of most cited researchers in three categories: geosciences; Social Sciences; and environment and ecology. In 2021, UN Secretary-General Guterres appointed him to a 10-member group to advise the UN on the technological assistance mechanism for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
His main scientific achievements include the coordination and development of the so-called Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) and Shared Socioeconomic pathways (SSPs), which enabled an integrated analysis of response options to climate change throughout the scientific community (Riahi et al., 2017). He plays a leading role in the scientific community as a member of the scientific steering committee of the Integrated Assessment Models Consortium (IAMC) and the International Committee On New Integrated Climate Change Assessment Scenarios (ICONICS), where he is responsible for coordinating and sharing - designing flagship research activities throughout the research community.
